Knuckle Hill Equine Works Training and Rehabilitation

Knuckle Hill Equine Works...helping horses succeed

Training

Training begins with building a working relationship based on trust and respect. Ground manners are essential to that relationship. Horses learn about personal space. They learn to tie quietly wherever they are put. They learn to stand obediently for grooming, clipping, bathing and farrier work. They learn to load into the trailer without hesitation. They learn to move forward when asked and stop on command. They learn to go down the trails, away from the herd, with confidence. All young horses learn to work on the longe line and long lines before riding. Once they get comfortable with long lining in the ring we head out through pastures and onto the trails. This helps them learn to accept the voice behind them and establish a forward stride. This forms the foundation for riding. Under saddle our primary goal is good posture. Horses, like children, need to be reminded to stand up straight and quit shuffling their feet! Every horse has a dominant side and care is taken to develop both sides evenly. Horses learn to work off seat and legs first and hands second. Protocols are tweaked for the style of riding you want to do. Whether you want to lope on a loose rein or ride an extended trot on the bit, a good foundation is key. I also work with older horses that need a refresher course or some polish. I like to start those horses by watching the owner interact with their horse. Sometimes the answer lies in changing the way you communicate what you’re asking for and then spending some time instilling those signals and expectations in the horse. I’ll also look for and address any points of pain that may be causing resistence in the horse’s body. The training program is custom designed to meet your needs. I take many horses to their first schooling or breed show. I can also take your horse on group trail rides. If you are considering selling your horse I have lots of experience with that too. Training fees start at $700 with additional charges for extras, such as hauling or showing. Most stays require a two month minimum. Much of training is about building muscle memory and that simply takes time. The fee for training includes full board. It also includes a weekly lesson for the owner. If your horse isn’t ready for you to ride we will work on ground skills or detailed explanations of what you’re seeing as you watch me ride. If you can’t travel weekly to visit your horse I will send out emails updating you on your horse’s progress.
